NPA Technical Theatre in Practice SCQF level 6

The SQA National Progression Awards (NPAs) are industry and sector specific courses aimed at developing skills and knowledge in preparation for further study or employment.

The course is Level 6 in the Scottish Qualifications Framework, the same level as Highers. NPAs can also attract UCAS points for those interested in applying to higher education.

The NPA in Technical Theatre in Practice (SCQF level 6) provides learners with knowledge and understanding and skills in creative design within specific areas of technical theatre. It will also allow the learner to specialise in either lighting or sound operations.

Course Outline

The course is made up of three units:

  • Technical Theatre in Context  - In this Unit, candidates will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of theatre personnel involved in the production process and will be introduced to the technical aspects and terminology of a theatre production. Candidates will also have the opportunity to analyse a live theatre production.

  • Theatrical Design - This Unit is designed to introduce candidates to theatrical design and will offer the candidates the opportunity to develop practical design skills, specialising in set, props, costume, lighting or sound design for a production. During the Unit, candidates will create a folio of design work. Candidates will carry out research, explore a text, create designs and drawings, and work as part of a production team for a theatre production. Working with others, candidates will have the opportunity to develop communication skills in on-going liaison with fellow members of the production team.

  • Specialism (Lighting or Sound Operation) - Candidates will have the opportunity to specialise within a particular area of Technical theatre. This Unit will provide Candidates with the knowledge and skills to operate and maintain relevant equipment associated with their specialism. They will gain practical experience of operating a range of equipment that we have at Imagine That Performing Arts within the context of a production.

Our course will run from August 2024 - May 2025. Classes will take place on Sundays, 9am till 12pm. Times are subject to change in relation to guest tutor visits, performances, presentations, and access to the studio for practical skills.

Assessment

The course is assessed using a range of assessments including, but not limited to, closed books tests, presentations, practical assessments, and written assignments. Units (and the overall award) are graded as pass or fail.

Award

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive the National Progression Award in Technical Theatre in Practice.
